Candlestone Resort Architect - Belding Golf
A course as sweet as the apples that once grew here.
Our architects offer you the fruit of their labor.
Candlestone Golf & Resort is a golf course fortunate to have had the benefit of shaping from two distinguished course architects.
Opened in 1978, the course was originally designed by Jerry Matthews.
In 2009, under the direction of our new ownership, the course got a much-needed facelift under the direction of Michael Husby.
The course these men shaped and reshaped takes full advantage of the natural terrain here, once an apple orchard. Majestic pines and hardwoods line the fairways with rolling terrain, beautiful fairways and lush greens.
Ornery architects?
Playfully ornery – or down-right mean? That's for you to decide, as these two designers “offer” you the opportunity to test yourself around sand and water! Water comes into play quite often here, as holes two, three, four, eight, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 16 afford you the risk of getting a wet ball. Bunkers — 52 in all — offer still more challenge.
Jerry Matthews' http://naturalcoursedesign.com/ design philosophy lays out like this:
-
Allow nature and the existing contours of the land to suggest the placement of holes and the flow of the course.
-
Conserve the natural beauty of the land.
-
Provide an innovative, challenging, forgiving and fair golf experience for all skill levels.
-
Maintain a deep understanding that golf will always be more of an art than a science.
-
Demonstrate a reverence and a respect for the history and traditions of golf.
As for Mike Husby http://mikehusbygolf.com, his thoughts on golf design include:
-
"We listen to the client, we feel the land, and unite the two."
-
"We know that it is simple to design a hole to be difficult, our talent surfaces when we create a hole that meets the challenge of all players regardless of talent."
-
"We design holes that golfers can see, feel, and enjoy while experiencing the beauty that the game can provide."
